Roughly five years ago, now-deceased Dominican emcee Monkey Black made huge waves by crossing dembow over to the Latin mainstream with his jazzy, salsa-influenced dembow single “Ratacutupla.” His murder in Spain last year was a grievous blow to the Dominican musical community, and his memory continues to leave an impact on his musical peers. On Chosen Few – Urbano Road – a new, 17-track dembow compilation EP compiled by Dominican label Chosen Few/Emerald Entertainment boss Boy Wonder – “Ratacutupla” receives a remix featuring some of DR’s leading emcees, including Shellow Shaq, Quimico Ultramega and Melymel joining in with new rhymes.
