Nomi Ruiz is bringing her “Cocaino” single to new heights this week. We wouldn’t expect any less of the multidisciplinary artist—from her work with New York’s acclaimed Hercules and Love Affar, Jessica 6 EDM outfit and her brooding solo club bops, to her forays into television on the Sons Of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans MC—Ruiz stands out as the “renaissance woman” she so aptly references.

Central to that identity is her seamless ability to mingle a soulful groove with, yes, even reggaeton. And that’s precisely what we get to hear on her “Cocaino” remix, which features Zeta Galan and mixing by the queer-championed electronic crew, Rosa Perreo. It premieres exclusively on Remezcla, below.

Ruiz’s “Cocaino” remix is true to form, delivering a complete overhaul from the original single. Released December 6, “Cocaino” kicked off with a smokey bassline and Ruiz’s sultry ode to obsession (or is it addiction?), but today’s remix sees Rosa Perreo’s D’Marquesina and Modabot’s signature neo-perreo leanings highlighted all the way. With a lilting opening verse by New York-based reggaetonero and trapero Zeta Galan, “Cocaino” shapeshifts into Ruiz’s former club territory. Except it’s a cooldown song of the night, a romantic minute (or four) to settle.

While we’re premiering the track here, it isn’t it’s official debut. Over in Puerto Rico, Ruiz premiered the remix live with Zeta Galan at a Rosa Perreo party—much like the beloved queer club series that takes place at Brooklyn’s House of Yes and Bossa Nova Civic Club. No doubt that “Cocaino (Remix)” will get its moment back at the local venues soon enough.

Until then, however, you can catch Nomi Ruiz perform at The Sultan Room on Saturday, February 29th. She’ll be joined by sets from Ms Boogie, the Afro-Latina Brooklyn-based MC, and DJ Dylan The Gypsy.
