Spanish duo Catarata has figured out how to blur the line where rap and indie rock meet – no easy task. This is best exemplified on their 2014 eponymous debut album, and, a year later, the band has decided to release a remixed version of it, with each track reinterpreted by a different beatmaker.
One of the standouts is Lost Twin‘s take on “El Cactus.” While the original is a dark number on the verge of post rock, with hints of a Western movie soundtrack, the remix by the Seville-born, Brighton-based producer transform it into a cloud rap track. The only element he kept was the acapella, backing it up with hazy layers of synth pads and distortion, but giving the vocals enough space to breathe. The conflict between the rhythm of Elphomega‘s flow, the bass line, and the pulsating kick drum makes it a very interesting listen.
