Just days after the loss of fourth-grade teacher Irma Garcia, 48, during the tragic shooting in Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, the family has revealed that her husband has passed. Following the tragedy on Tuesday (May 24) that killed 19 children and two adults, the late teacher’s husband, Joe Garcia, has died “due to grief,” shares the family online.

The Garcia Family shared a GoFundMe page for the family during these difficult times. On the website, Irma’s cousin Debra Garcia Austin wrote: “I am equally devastated to report Irma’s husband Joe has tragically passed away this morning (5/26/2022) as a result of a medical emergency. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart, and losing the love of his life of more than 25 years was too much to bear.”

On Twitter, someone who identified himself as Garcia’s nephew wrote similar sentiments, sharing, “My Tia Irma’s husband Joe Garcia has passed away due to grief.”

The two leave behind four children, and according to her biography on the school district’s website, they’ve been married for 24 years. “I love to BBQ with my husband, listen to music, and take country cruises to Concan,” Irma shared on the site.

Among the victims is also another fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles. Her aunt, Lydia Martinez Delgado, told The New York Times that Mireles died trying to protect her students. Mireles leaves behind a husband and a child.

This mass shooting at Robb Elementary is now the deadliest school shooting in Texas history. See the complete list of the victims here and ways to help those affected here.
