The Houston Astros made history last night, becoming the first team to win two game 7s in the same postseason and etched their names in history as 2017 World Series champions–the team’s first-ever title. It’s been a long time coming for this core group of players. After Hurricane Harvey ravaged the city of Houston and its surrounding areas, the team took on a mission to bring a moment of distraction and happiness to the city and that’s exactly what they did. However, on one of the greatest nights of his life, Astros star Carlos Correa wasn’t just satisfied with a World Series ring. He had another ring in mind.
During his postgame interview, the 23-year-old Puerto Rican shortstop got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, Daniella Rodriguez, on live TV.
Rodriguez, a former Miss Texas USA, had no clue that the proposal would go down, saying after that Correa“had been so focused on the game. All he ever talked about was winning the World Series, so I never really thought something like this would be on his mind. So, when it all went down, I was just shocked.”
None of Correa’s teammates were shocked, however, as he made them aware of his plans during the Series. “I didn’t have a plan B,” said Correa, admitting that he let his team in on the secret hoping that they’d hit home runs for him. They did not disappoint.
“I saw a picture of the ring two days ago,” said Astros third baseman Alex Bergman. “We were supposed to do it after Game 6, but then we didn’t play our game. Came back today, won the World Series, the guy proposed to his girlfriend. Aside from the impending proposal, Correa had a lot on his mind during the Series; after Game 7, he revealed that he injured his thumb during the postgame celebration following Game 2’s walk-off win. He still went on to play in the next 5 games of the series with the injury, receiving numerous injections in his thumb throughout. Correa managed to produce a .817 OPS in the series, despite the injury in a Fall Classic that he and his new fiancée will never forget.
