It’s no secret that Latin Americans play a big role in Major League Baseball. When the Washington Nationals won its first World Series on Wednesday, it was partly because of the Dominican players on the roster. So when they celebrated their win, they paid tribute to the D.R., where many began their journeys to becoming the athletes they are today.
Juan Soto, for example, hails from Boca Chica, where Washington has established its Caribbean baseball academy. Even for those Latin American players not from quisqueya, the Dominican Republic plays a significant role in their development. Because every MLB team has a facility on the island, it’s become a necessary stop for Latin American beisbolistas trying to make it in the U.S.
So at what’s reported to be one of the most Latino / Latin American World Series, it shouldn’t be surprising that the Dominican flag would be hoisted.
