Ecuadorian Futbol Player Marco Angulo Tragically Dies at 22

Marco Angulo Solórzano, a young 22-year-old Ecuadorian footballer has died after spending over a month in critical condition after a car crash. Angulo played for Liga de Quito and had previously played with his national team. The car crash that left Angulo in critical condition also killed two other footballers, Roberto Cabezas, who played at Independiente Juniors, and Víctor Charcopa Nazareno, who played at Cuniburo FC.

Angulo suffered multiple injuries, including a pelvic fracture, right pneumothorax, cerebral edema, and subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhages. He had brain surgery to alleviate the intracranial pressure, but ultimately could not recover. Angulo played for Independiente del Valle, Independiente Juniors, F. C. Cincinnati, and Liga de Quito in his young career. 

His team, Liga de Quito, posted a statement that read, “It is with deep pain and sadness that we regret to report the passing of our beloved player Marco Angulo. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. His passing is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts,”

The Ecuadorian Federation (FEF) also released a statement, that read: “Former member of the Tri national team, who with his talent and dedication defended the colors of our country at every opportunity he had. Marco was not only an outstanding player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts, especially in all of us who shared countless trips, training camps and matches with him. We join in solidarity with his family, teammates and loved ones, wishing them strength in this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, MLS’ statement about Angulo read, “Major League Soccer mourns the tragic passing of Marco Angulo. Marco was a talented young midfielder for FC Cincinnati last season, helping the club capture the Supporters’ Shield before continuing his development on loan with LDU Quito in his native Ecuador. During this difficult time, we extend our condolences to Marco’s wife and son, as well as his entire family, friends, teammates, and the soccer community. He will be greatly missed.”
