During a fútbol match between Barcelona and Real Madrid on Saturday night (July 23), Barcelona star Gerard Piqué was seemingly booed by many of the 60,000 fans inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Along with all the boos, he got to hear American fans chant the name of his ex-girlfriend Shakira.
In early June, Shakira and Piqué confirmed their split. Although either party has not released the reason for their breakup, speculation that Piqué cheated on Shakira has become the central theory. Some Shakira fans even wondered if her latest song, “Te Felicito,” about an unfaithful lover, was written about her ex and the father of her two children.
According to reports, every time Piqué touched the ball during the game Saturday night, he was allegedly booed by both fans of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Some Twitter users found it hilarious that it took the team’s hatred for Piqué to quell the rivalry between the two teams temporarily.
Gerard Piqué was already a controversial figure in Spain and is known to be booed by his own fans during games in Barcelona. While much of fans’ ire comes from things Piqué has done on the field in the past, others take issue with his political comments.
No matter the main reason Piqué was being booed by fans in the United States, it’s evident from the videos posted on social media that people are on Team Shakira.
