With the 2022 World Cup starting in less than a week, Lionel Messi will be focusing on Argentina’s national team. But once that tournament is over, it’ll be time for big decisions for the Argentinian striker, and the most important of those will be if he remains with French Club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) or moves on, perhaps somewhere closer to his heart.
For now, contract talks are on pause according to The Daily Mail as Messi heads to Qatar to represent his country in the 2022 Word Cup. But PSG is hoping to convince him to remain in the French capital for at least a couple more years according to Mundo Deportivo. His current contract expires at the end of the season. And this is especially important for the club now that rumors indicate FC Barcelona is keen to have Messi back next year.
Rumors of Messi’s return to Barcelona jumped to new heights right before the 2022 World Cup when the president of FC Barcelona Joan Laporta reportedly said, “Messi’s return to Barça in 2023? Leo knows that Barcelona is always his home.”
Messi’s love for Barcelona, the club he played for his entire career before coming to PSG, since he was a little kid, is well known. The club’s financial issues forced him to depart, but if the opportunity is right, he might jump at the chance to be able to go back to the club, team up with Robert Lewandowski, and hopefully, help Barcelona return to the fearsome team they once were.
Right now, all Lionel Messi and his fans want is a chance at that one trophy that has evaded arguably one of the best players in the history of the game. Whether he gets it or not might condition what decision he makes going forward. So for PSG and Barcelona, there’s nothing else to do right now other than wait and root for Argentina, hoping a win there might sway Messi in their favor.
