US Olympic gymnast and son of the Bronx John Orozco was featured heavily prior to the games in the Gym Class Heroes video for their song “The Fighter.”
But as much as I’m rooting for him because he’s a Puerto Rican guy from the Bronx, I couldn’t help but decide that it was actually his mother, Damaris Orozco, that was my favorite Olympian. Every time the camera found her she seemed seconds from hyperventilating, doing a lap around the rosary beads, unable to even watch her son compete…until finally the crowd’s applause signalled that he was done, and she would go completely nuts.
She’s the best, and we want to hug her.
