At least three days a week, Mario Lopez heads to Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym and trains like a boxer. The intense training has resulted in a torn rotator cuff and a snapped rib, but boxing helps him feel at peace. Now, Mario is taking his love of the sport past amateur level by challenging retired boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya to a match. I know, it sounds pretty WTF, but the two are actually fighting to raise money and awareness for Utah-based CharityVision. The fight will take place on June 11 at the Rail Event Center in Salt Lake City.
“I can’t wait to get into the ring with Oscar and have some fun with him, but most importantly, bring attention to the work that CharityVision does to give many deserving individuals the gift of sight,” Lopez said, according to Fox News Latino. “It’s an honor to be part of their great work and we’re going to have a great night that will change many lives.” CharityVision expects to raise $1 million from the fight, which will allow them to treat 40,000 people around the world.
While it’ll be fun to see how Mario’s skillz compare to OdlH, I, for one, would rather see his Saved by the Bell character, A.C. Slater, putting his wrestling skills to use in the UFC octagon.
