In the aftermath of securing France’s second World Cup trophy, an overjoyed Paul Pogba took to social media to share the euphoria with as much of the world as possible. Making good use of his phone’s front-facing camera, Pogba gave us a look into the team’s locker room after the game. He spun around and made several rounds throughout the room, where former players and President Emmanuel Macron came to share in the celebration. The polyglot invited people all over the world into the special moment by switching between several languages, including French, English, Italian, and Spanish. But perhaps the most entertainment came when he spoke Spanish.
For a few minutes, Pogba donned a sombrero while Antoine Griezmann did his best Mexican accent impression (“viva Mexico cabrones” and “un saludito a Carlitos Vela, güey). Several times, Pogba asks someone to put on reggaeton and salsa, but unfortunately, we don’t get to see that come to pass. Though we do know the team is a fan of reggaeton.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Pogba speak Spanish during this tournament. After Peru was defeated, he took the time to respond to a journalist in near-perfect Spanish. In March, he explained that he learned the language through his Spanish-speaking teammates. “Listening to people. My friends (Paulo) Dybala, Juan (Cuadrado) or Lito (Carlos Tevez) and listening here and there, it sticks. I told them: ‘Speak Spanish, only Spanish. I want to understand.”
