Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are looking to replicate their success at Wrexham AFC in Mexico. The Deadpool star and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator/writer/actor have joined investors Eva Longoria, Al Tylis, and Sam Porter in purchasing a stake in the century-old Mexican fútbol Club Necaxa.

Reports indicate that Longoria herself brought Reynolds and McElhenney into the investor group. The size of their investment is unclear at this point. Reports also indicate that Tylis and Porter have acquired a 5% stake in Wrexham as part of the transaction.

The pair already have a strong track record when it comes to investing in sports. Reynolds and McElhenney invested in the Welsh club Wrexham AFC when the club was struggling to get promoted from the National League, the fifth tier in English Football. Now, the team has been promoted twice and will be playing in the English League One in the 2024-2025 Season, the third tier in English football.

A lot of Wrexham AFC’s success and popularity comes from their TV docu-series Welcome to Wrexham. The series, which will premiere its third season on May 2nd, chronicles the pair’s purchase of the club and the revitalization of both the club and the town around them. The question is now whether, with the pair’s purchase of Club Necaxa, they could bring a similar docuseries format to the storied Mexican club.

According to Variety, who reported the story, it’s still too early to speculate on the possibility. But, unlike Wrexham, Club Necaxa plays in a popular league, La Liga MX, the most watched fútbol league in the United States. So the possibilities for growth with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney seem endless, and that can only be good for fútbol in general and Mexican fútbol in particular.
