Pachuca Introduced New Signing Omar González in a Full Darth Vader Costume

Darth Vader or Pachuca’s newest defensive reinforcement …? Whichever way you want to swing it, one thing’s for certain: Omar González is making the move to Liga MX action.

Yesterday, the LA Galaxy – González’s longtime club – came to an agreement with Pachuca for the transfer of the 27-year-old U.S. international defender (fee undisclosed). His presentación had a distinct Star Wars flavoring:

González has spent practically his entire career with LA since being drafted by the Galaxy back in 2009. His legacy spans across 200 + games, and includes three MLS Cups, Rookie of the Year (2009) and Defender of the Year (2011) accolades. In 2013, he became the first defender to receive a designated player contract in league history.

“This is part of sports; it is part of the world that we live in,” club president Chris Klein told LAGalaxy.com in reference to González’s move to Mexico. “Omar has meant and will always mean a tremendous amount to the Galaxy, both to our club and our fans. Any way that you slice it, this is going to be bittersweet for us because we all love Omar.”

Omar loves them, too. In a letter to his “Galaxy Family,” he wrote: “since moving here as a 20-year-old, you have made me feel extremely welcome and because of your generosity, I am proud to call LA my second home.”

How he will fare in Mexico remains to be seen. The battle for defensive dominance might be a tough one – as Pachuca’s stellar offseason buys include the likes of Stefan Medina, Oscar Murillo, and Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Garcia – but the veteran defender will most likely be up for the fight.

Some are excited and intrigued by his introduction to Liga MX play.

While others are downright dreary and pessimistic.
