Still from 'Anuel AA on Latin Trap’s Crossover: Why Would I Rap in English If I Shine in Spanish?'

It’s been just two days since Anuel AA was released from federal prison after serving a 2-year sentence for possession of a firearm, but the Puerto Rican rapper has already released a new album, teased a second remix of summer smash “Te Boté” with J.Lo, and hinted at an upcoming tour with longtime friend and collaborator Ozuna. The artist better known as Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago spoke to the press for the first time since his release on Wednesday, where he revealed the creative process behind Real Hasta La Muerte and shared his plans to take back the throne of Latin trap.

Remezcla secured an exclusive one-on-one interview with Anuel after he was released, featuring Uptown radio titan DJ Flipstar. The Dominican DJ, who is a staple at Power 105.1 and X96.3 and helped birth the trap en español movement in New York, sat down with Gazmey Santiago to talk about the genre and its explosive rise since his incarceration. In the conversation, the “Brindemos” star shared details on his plans as a free man and revealed his perspective on English-language crossovers: “Why would do that if I shine in Spanish?” he said.
