The show has only been on for a few weeks but is amassing quite the audience. When you have Danny Trejo selling tacos in your honor you’re onto something! Since premiering on September 4, FX has announced, Mayans M.C. averaged 8.2 million viewers an episode (both on traditional television and digital platforms) making it the highest-rated cable series premiere this year. So it’s no surprise the Latino-led show has been greenlit for a second season.

Detailing the story of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (played by JD Pardo), Mayans M.C. is a spinoff of the long-running series Sons of Anarchy. Since Mayans debuted the show has become its own “mythical creature,” per Sons of Anarchy showrunner Kurt Sutter. The new show was the top series for adults in the coveted 18-49 demographic as well as male audiences.

In a television landscape where series are either big hits or instant failures, especially in the era of streaming, FX believes in Mayans M.C., no surprise considering the show’s timing with our current politics. Mayans‘ success certainly helps make FX look less like a network aimed strictly at white men and it’ll be interesting to see if this series has the longevity of its predecessor.

The second season of Mayans M.C. will debut in 2019.
