From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola
The story and work of avante-garde photographers Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola are the subjects of this show at the MOMA. From the 1920s to the 1950s, the duo initiated an exchange of creative ideas across Europe and South America. Stern and Coppola met at the Bauhaus art school in Germany in 1932, with Coppola moving there from Argentina. Only a year later, the couple fled Nazi Germany, going to London and eventually Buenos Aires to mingle with other contemporary culture creators along the way. Stern’s photographs include portraits of intelligentsia such as Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda and feminist playwright Amparo Alvajar. The show is up until October 4th.

Altered Appearances
A photography show housed in a former parachute harness factory is showing a great collection of images from the last 20 years. Included in the show are photos by Felix Gonzalez-Torres and the always controversial Andres Serrano who took pictures of Ku Klux Klan members. The FLCA is FREE and open Thursday through Monday from 12 to 5pm.

Limit Work: Steph Gonzalez-Turner
There’s a reception this Thursday from 6 to 8pm for Gonzalez-Turner’s work using acid-dyed silk paintings and decaying sculptural columns. Using feminist discourse, medical chemicals for the dying, textiles, organic materials and science– a very male dominated field– Gonzalez-Turner uses her work to open dialogues about the body and its regenerative and reparative qualities.
