Conan In Cuba: He Drank Rum, Rolled Cigars, Danced Rumba & Made TV History

Twitter has spoken, and for the most part it was a unanimous standing ovation for Conan O’Brien’s historic television special Conan in Cuba. As the first American talk show to film in the country in more than 50 years, there was a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Conan did what he does best, made himself the butt of the joke and acted like a crazy weirdo. He took a Spanish class, learned to dance to rumba and roll a cigar, and drank himself into a crying fit at the Havana Club Rum museum. It was hilarious. Fans of Conan were more than congratulatory, some even predict awards for his “comedic diplomacy.”

Amongst the torrential praise that showered on Conan via Twitter, there were a few detractors who felt his comedic take on Havana ignored the realities that Cubans live under.

Politics aside, (I know that’s easier said than done for many Cubans, whether inside or outside the country) Conan’s quirky brand of humor made lots of people LOL. He brought the two countries closer together and ended the special with his own wish for further cultural exchange.
