Salsa extraordinaire Jose Luis “Cheo” Feliciano (78) passed away early Thursday in a car accident in Cupey, Puerto Rico. According to official sources he was driving alone when he crashed his car into a light post. His sudden death prompted the the governor of Puerto Rico to declare three days of mourning.

Cheo’s musical career began in the 1950s when he moved to New York City and played alongside the likes of Tito Rodriguez, Joe Cuba, and Eddie Palmieri. In his 60+ year-long musical career he recorded salsa and bolero classics such as “Anacaona,” “Mi Triste Problema,” and “Contigo Aprendi,” among others.

The Remezcla office is paying our respects by blasting his music all day, and we’ve compiled some of our favorites into a playlist you can bump to honor his memory.

Descansa en paz Cheo.
