A Mexican electroclash classic is getting compared to the latest album from Charli xcx. Fans of the duo María Daniela y su Sonido Lasser are saying online that they’re a precursor to Brat, yet others think their names shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence.

Charli xcx has helped push hyperpop into the mainstream. This past week, the British singer-songwriter scored one of the highest chart genres in the album with Brat reaching the top five in both the U.S. and U.K. On X (formerly known as Twitter), one person asked for more albums that are in a similar vein to Brat. One answer that gained a lot of traction was a comparison to María Daniela y su Sonido Lasser’s 2007 album Juventud En Éxtasis.

Juventud En Éxtasis includes María Daniela y su Sonido Lasser’s biggest hits like “Pobre Estúpida” and “Pecadora Normal.” The Mexican group pushed electropop into a punk and Hi-NRG direction, which is where hyperpop is now. Many people online agreed with María Daniela y su Sonido Lasser getting compared to Charli xcx. “EXACTLY,” one person wrote on X. Another person responded, “For real!!!”

Then, there were people who disagreed with Juventud En Éxtasis being in the same league as Brat. “María Daniela sin pedo can sing the entire BRAT [album] but Charli couldn’t even sing at least one song from Juventud En Éxtasis,” one person wrote in Spanish. Another person responded, “Charli wishes.”

One Latine artist who is currently doing hyperpop in Spanish is Argentine singer Six Sex. She is making waves with her frenetic songs like “4 Novios” and “Lokita maniaticA.” Mexican pop stars Sofia Reyes and Danna dabbled in the genre last year in “TQUM.” Kim Petras later joined them on a remix of a song. Chilean singer Denise Rosenthal also teamed up with Danna for the hyperpop bop “Sugar Mami.”
