Mon Laferte brought the melodrama to Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night (July 11). The Chilean rocker gave a spellbinding performance of her latest single, “Tenochtitlán.”

Last November, Laferte released her most experimental album yet, Autopoiética. She brought her alternative edge to genres like reggaeton in “NO+SAD,” cumbia in “Te Juro Que Volveré,” and house in “Autopoiética.” She also explored trip-hop in the emotional track “Tenochtitlán.” The LP was inspired by the philosophy of autopoiesis by Chilean biologists Francisco Varela and Humberto Maturana in the 1970s.

“Before thinking about a melody or lyrics, in my head was the idea of creating an album with the concept of autopoiesis,” Laferte shared in a statement back in November. “I am autopoietic by nature. All beings can create and be reborn constantly. That’s the central idea of the album. Another thing too, autopoietic comes from the Greek poiesis, which means to produce, but that’s also where the word poetry comes from, so I find it so beautiful that in the creation itself is poetry.”

Laferte brought the vision of Autopoiética to life on Kimmel’s late-night show. (The special guest host was Kumail Ali Nanjiani, who filled in for Kimmel). In front of a giant sculpture of a person weeping, she belted out the song “Tenochtitlán.” Laferte even performed the Autotuned part of the mesmerizing ballad live. More than a decade after breaking out with her Desechable album, she proved she is still one of Latine music’s most electrifying performers. As of press time, the live performance has yet to be uploaded to Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Back in December, Laferte announced the dates for her Autopoiética Tour in the U.S. and Latin America. The stateside leg of the tour wrapped up on June 2 at La Onda music festival in Napa Valley, CA. Laferte is currently touring Europe and the U.K.
