After winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature last week, Disney’s beloved film Encanto continues to spread love and respect for the culture of Colombia across the globe. That includes places like Disneyland where the Madrigal family and Encanto’s other memorable characters are becoming a bigger attraction.
Starting April 11, 2022, Disneyland will project images from the film that will pay tribute to the hit song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” Don’t be surprised if visitors start singing along.
On April 22, an Encanto-inspired float will join others in the Main Street Electrical Parade, which features more than half a million lights and floats from classic Disney movies like Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Pinocchio and Peter Pan, and other more modern films like Raya and the Last Dragon and Coco. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the parade.
In recent months, characters like Mirabel Madrigal have been seen interacting with Disneyland visitors.
So, how else could Encanto make an impact at Disneyland in the future? In February, Oscar-nominated songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda said he could imagine the Encanto universe expanded to include a fully functional Casita. He spoke to Disney CEO Bob Chapek about some of his ideas.
“I know there’s a world in which this Casita lives in a theme park, and we get to actually walk through it in real life,” Miranda said. “And that’s really exciting.”
Earlier that same month, Chapek referred to the animated film as “the launch of a new franchise,” so maybe a parade float is just the beginning.
“I don’t know what form that takes,” Miranda said. “I don’t know if that’s an animated series. I don’t know if that’s a second movie. I don’t know if that’s a stage adaptation where we have a little more time to go deep. I think it’s all possible, but we had no conversations about what they actually are.”
