Oscar-nominated actress Salma Hayek (Eternals) can handle the heat. She proved her threshold for pain during a recent episode of the YouTube web series Hot Ones where Hayek joined host Sean Evans to promote her new Marvel movie, Eternals, and ran through the gauntlet of spicy chicken wings with little trouble. In Eternals, Hayek plays Ajak, the leader” of a team of immortal superheroes.
If you’ve never seen Hot Ones, the show features Evans interviewing celebrities while chowing down on a series of wings that have been flavored with 10 different types of hot sauces. As the interview continues, the wings get spicier and spicier.
“I’m OK with hot food,” Hayek said before the start of the challenge. “I’m Mexican.”
Although Hayek said she had “been on a break from alcohol and hot food,” she was ready to see if her tongue could “endure the hotness” and complete the Q&A like some of her fellow Latines have over the last 15 seasons, including Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Iglesias. Hayek’s episode marked the seventh one of the 16th season and the 235th overall. The last Latine celebrity to participate on the series was rapper J Balvin earlier this year.
During her Hot Ones appearance, Hayek answered questions about everything from her love for truffles to the best place to eat tacos outside of Mexico. She also discussed playing her Academy Award-nominated role as the title character in Frida.
“[Frida Kahlo] said she painted her reality, but her reality was so poetic in so many ways because that’s the way she chose to see it,” Hayek said.
At one point, Hayek also joked with Evans that if any of the hot sauces made her sick, she was going to send the Mexican mafia after him.
“I’m just kidding,” Hayek said right after. “I shouldn’t have said that.”
