Though RBD’s reunion is a few weeks away, the Mexican pop group already has to dispel rumors. On Tuesday (Jan. 3), the band and ex-RBD member Alfonso Herrera set the record straight about his decision not to rejoin them.
Last month, RBD announced that the band would return with the members Anahí, Dulce María, Christian Chávez, Christopher von Uckermann, and Maite Perroni. Herrera opted not to be a part of the reunion that will be taking place on Jan. 19.
Yesterday, the Mexican outlet TVNotas published a report claiming that Herrera requested $10 million to be a part of the reunion. When that request was reportedly denied, he decided not to rejoin his bandmates while wanting to disregard his RBD roots. The five members of RBD put out a press release that called the information in TVNotas report “false” and “defamatory.”
“No member from the office in charge of the project has been in contact with the magazine and has never provided even the slightest detail in relation to these projects,” RBD’s statement read. “There exists respect, love, and mutual support between the members of RBD and Alfonso Herrera, so this report is only trying to discredit and attack the image, reputation, honor, and integrity of the group.”
Herrera also responded to the TVNotas report. On Twitter, he clarified that he supports his ex-bandmates and is proud of his RBD past even though he will not be a part of the reunion. “Denying my past implies denying my present,” Herrera wrote. “Money is not everything and it does not fully motivate my decisions. I am grateful for what I had, what I have and what is to come. I will always wish the best for any project that derives from Rebelde. In the same way that my colleagues have supported me in absolutely everything, which I deeply appreciate.”
Herrera ended his note with a message that embodies the spirit of RBD and Rebelde. “Rebelde meant and still means pursuing your dreams and being consistent with what you want in life,” he wrote. “It’s something I strive for every day. Sometimes I achieve it and sometimes I learn. And to the fans my eternal gratitude for so much support and love. Happy 2023.”
Herrera also plugged his upcoming movie ¡Que Viva México!, which will be coming out on Mar. 23. RBD launched the Soy rebelde world website, where fans can sign up for more information on the band’s comeback this month.
