#FreeSafaera already! It seems Bad Bunny’s reggaetón banger and fan-favorite “Safaera” has landed in hot waters again, facing new legal troubles. El Conejo Malo is now being accused of plagiarizing songs from legendary Puerto Rican DJ and record producer Pedro Torruellas, AKA DJ Playero.
According to court documents, a lawsuit was filed by AOM Music on September 27, 2021, stating that Bad Bunny was being sued for “violation of the copyright of three works produced by DJ Playero … with the ‘Safaera’ song from his album YHLQMDLG.”
The songs the reggaetonero is being accused of using unlawfully within “Safaera” are “Besa Tu Cuerpo,” “Chocha Con Bicho,” and “Sigan Bailando.” Bad Bunny is one of 12 defendants in the suit. Other musicians who are named include Tainy, Jowell & Randy, Ñengo Flow, and DJ Urba.
However, the song’s originator is not the one coming after them. On Friday, DJ Playero took to Instagram to deny having anything to do with the lawsuit. He says he doesn’t have a business relationship with AOM Music and was making a statement because he says he and his family are being insulted on social media.
“I am not signed with anyone,” DJ Playero wrote. “I do not know that company, I do not profit from anyone, and I have no knowledge of that lawsuit.”
DJ Playero says he’s spent his entire career trying to keep a low profile and avoiding scandal. He prides himself in the way he’s been able to help other young musicians break into the business.
“I distinguish myself for being a serious, responsible person,” he wrote. “I send my respect to all the artists involved in this unfortunate situation.”
Neither Bad Bunny nor any of the other artists being sued have publicly commented on the case. We will update the story as it develops.
