The Oscar’s made an official announcement about the awards ceremony on what viewers can expect on March 27, which includes a tribute to the 60 years of James Bond and a “Godfather Celebration,” as well as the first-ever live performance of Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
Fans of the movie were excited, but others were skeptical because the song is not nominated for an Oscar. It’s important to note that this wasn’t a decision based on the Academy as the track wasn’t submitted by the studio. This had shocked fans as everyone felt it was an obvious frontrunner because of its immense popularity — reaching a peak of No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 10 weeks. Instead, the Academy nominated a track that was submitted: Lin Manuel Miranda’s emotional ballad, “Dos Oruguitas,” performed by Sebastián Yatra for “Best Original Song.”
On top of this, people are also upset that the Academy decided not to announce all 23 categories during the awards telecast in an attempt to streamline the ceremony and combat the historic lows viewership has reached with the last two ceremonies. Twitter users saw the announcement of the “We Don’t Talk about Bruno” performance as a way to entice people to watch the ceremony.
There has not been official word from the Academy about whether or not the performance will be included in a medley along with other “Best Original Song” nominees similar to what was done in 2013.
However, other Twitter users are happy the most popular song on the Encanto soundtrack is getting its moment at the ceremony.
The movie’s soundtrack has continuously racked up numerous accolades, with its most recent achievement being that it hit over one million units sold in album sales. It also broke the record for being the first No. 1 song for a Disney movie on the Hot 100 since “A Whole New World” from Aladdin in 1993.
