'Mirror, Mirror...' Frida Kahlo
To accompany the Frida Kahlo show at the New York Botanical Garden, an exhibition of rare vintage portraits of Frida are hung for your viewing pleasure at Throckmorton Fine Art. There are over 50 photographs of Kahlo taken by iconic photographers such as Lola Alvarez Bravo, Edward Weston, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Giséle Freund and more. There will also be images of Frida’s bathroom from La Casa Azul taken by Graciela Iturbide, as well as memorabilia, letters, and drawings. Imagine the visual experience a room full of images of the magical Frida Kahlo would give you. The show is up until September 12th.

Teresita Fernandez at Madison Square Park
Now that it feels like summer, it’s the perfect time for park adventures and checking the new public art installations. This newly installed piece by Teresita Fernandez at Madison Square Park is a great way to experience NYC’s public art projects. Fata Morgana is the name of her sculptural installation, which is a semi-transparent canopy made of golden mirrors that hovers above the park’s walkways. The title is an Italian word for the natural phenomena that appears on the horizon line as a mirage and can be seen most commonly in polar regions. However, Fata Morganas do appear everywhere– in deserts, beaches, lakes etc. and attribute to the magical essence of nature. Check out the beautiful sculpture which will be on view from tomorrow June 1st throughout the winter.

Marta Minujin : Rebel Spirit
Argentine conceptual and performance artist Marta Minujin started coordinating “happenings” in the early 60s around Paris, South America, and New York. She was critical of the institutions of art and their elitism, and even employed Andy Warhol to participate in her political art performances. In her performance with Andy Warhol, Minujin offers him bushels of corn (aka Latin American gold) as payment for Argentina’s national debt. She also staged kidnappings at cocktail parties being held at the MOMA. Take a look at the exciting ideas in her work at Henrique Faria. It is up until July 2nd.
