Anyone who’s been following El Alfa for more than a minute knows that the dembow prince has the vocal dexterity to shine in multiple styles, including hip-hop and Dominican dembow. Over the last several months, he’s been making a concerted effort to collaborate with artists of all urbano genres; in November, he delivered “Mi Mami,” a dembow-lite joint track with Cardi B; last week he dropped off “Tecnobow,” a Diplo-produced robot dembow number, and today Rapetón reports that another big hip-hop collab is on the way, this time with Harlem rapper A$AP Ferg.
El Alfa and Ferg were spotted recording the collaboration over the weekend at a New York studio. From the looks of it, the track is bilingual, effortlessly showcasing both Ferg and Alfa’s flows. Compared to reggaeton, Dominican dembow faces far more barriers to entry in the mainstream Spanish-language music industry, but El Alfa’s continued efforts to extend the movement’s reach by collaborating with artists of all genres may start to change that.
