Pan de muerto plays an important role in ofrendas. For Día de Muertos, the aptly named pan dulce, which is characterized by its criss-cross shape, stands in for sorrow. The bread, which is sometimes topped with sugar or sesame seed and other times filled with cajeta, chocolate or nata, signals the generosity of the host and feeds the dead after a long, weary journey.
But as with anything food-related, people have found ways to remix pan de muerto. Below, check out a few creations (and we’ll let you judge if they’re for you or not).
