Last month it was announced that the Sundance Film Festival would premiere Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch’s documentary on famed astrologer, Walter Mercado. But even before that anticipated world premiere, the doc has already found a home.
Netflix has announced that Constantini and Tabsch’s film, entitled Mucho Mucho Amor, will land at the streaming service later this summer. It’ll join a growing roster of Netflix projects — like the soon to be released Gentefied and the upcoming Selena series — that are targeting Latino audiences in the U.S.
Mucho Mucho Amor will examine Walter Mercado’s life, chronicling how he went from being a kid growing up in the sugar cane fields of Puerto Rico to becoming every Latino’s favorite cape-wearing, gender nonconforming psychic. Known for his exuberant positivity, Mercado had left the spotlight back in 2007. The doc picks up a decade later and promises to give fans, new and old, an in-depth look at the man behind the cape as he begins to plan a return to the public eye in what proved to be the last few years of his life: Mercado died of kidney failure on November 2, 2019, making the doc a posthumous celebration of all he stood for, both a document of who he was and an example of why he was beloved by more than 120 million fans around the world.
