The official trailer for Fast X makes it clear that this franchise is back to the high-stakes racing and drama that made it a massive success when it was first released in 2001. This time, we get to see some new characters on our screens, including Rita Moreno, who plays Abuela Toretto.

The trailer starts slow and quiet with Abuela Toretto hosting the Fast and Furious family at a dinner like only an abuela can. She stands at the head of the table at an outdoor dinner celebrating the family that her grandson has been able to put together over the years. She even gets a sweet moment with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) where she holds him close, a moment of peace before a pulse-pounding adventure filled with explosions, racing, and intense fight scenes begins.

And who’s behind all this trouble coming for our family? Jason Momoa’s Dante. From what we see in the trailer, he was intricately tied to the Rio heist in Fast Five. That left his family and life destroyed. So of course he plans on returning the favor to Dom by destroying his family and kidnapping his son.

Thankfully, Dom has Letty Ortiz-Toretto (Michelle Rodriguez) by his side. Letty has long been one of the strongest fighters in the family and, after three decades on screen, her tenacity and grit have not dulled once. And we’re looking forward to her recognizing game with Brie Larson’s Tess and taking down Charlize Theron’s Cipher once and for all.

As the Fast & Furious franchise enters its final chapters, Diesel has stated that the films are returning to their roots.

“You wanted to go back to the streets of L.A. You wanted to return to racing and what that feels like. You wanted to return to the cars that made this franchise what it is,” Diesel told fans at a movie event in Los Angeles during a screening of the Fast X trailer. “The support that you have given us, you have allowed us to be your family.”

Though there is little attention to Moreno’s character in the trailer, we can’t wait for the movie to hit theaters on May 19 to see Abuela Toretto’s full storyline. And hopefully, she’ll get behind the wheel and show Dom how it’s really done. Or better yet, here’s hoping Rita Moreno and Helen Mirren race each other.
