Natanael Cano is taking on a classic Juan Gabriel composition. Last night (Oct. 3), the Mexican superstar released his version of the song “Amor Eterno,” originally popularized by Rocío Dúrcal.

Though Cano is a leader of the new wave of corridos tumbados, he also pays tribute to música mexicana’s past. Back in May, he released a cover of “Ya Te Olvidé,” penned by Mexican legend Marco Antonio Solís. That song was made famous by Dúrcal and Yuridia’s versions. Now Cano is embracing the music of late flamboyant icon Juan Gabriel to get ready for Día de los Muertos next month.

“This is one of those songs that stays in your memory forever,” Cano said in a statement. “It brings back so many childhood memories for me. I’ve wanted to record this track for a while now to pay homage to the great JuanGa and my other idols, like Ariel Camacho. I like that it coincides with the Day of the Dead because I feel many people will identify with the song. We all have loved ones who have passed on.”

Cano puts a completely new spin on “Amor Eterno” with his corridos tumbados version. He also digs deep to capture the emotion of the song with his heartfelt performance. The music video shows Cano performing the song in the middle of a bar. Nata singing JuanGa wasn’t on the lotería card, but he breathes new life into the beloved song.

Next month, Cano will see if he wins his first Latin Grammy award. His Nata Montana LP is nominated in the newly created Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album category. Cano’s competition includes albums by DannyLux, Grupo Frontera, Carín León, Michelle Maciel, and Peso Pluma. The 2024 Latin Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on Univision on Nov. 14.
