If there’s something our communities will always, always find comfort in it;s food. As the year comes to a close, Google has just released a list of the top trending lists of 2024–the things that spiked in searches because, at one point or another, our communities were very interested in them. And some particular food items make the list because of course they do.
So, what are our communities searching for when it comes to food? These are the top trending searches by Latinos in the US, in Spanish, when it comes to recipes.
- Pavo Relleno al Horno (Baked Stuffed Turkey)
- Chicha Venezolana
- Espresso Martini
- Ropa Vieja Cubana
- Pay de Queso (Cheese Pie)
- Puré de Papa (Mashed Potatoes)
- Coquito Boricua (Puerto Rican Coquito)
- Quesillo Venezolano
- Chimichurri Argentino
- Espagueti Verde (Green Spaghetti)
For those unfamiliar, Espagueti Verde is a Mexican recipe. It’s basically pasta with a smooth, roasted poblano and jalapeño sauce. Meanwhile, the chicha venezolana, or chica de arroz, is a traditional Venezuelan drink made from boiled rice, milk, and sugar. It has a consistency similar to eggnog. In a way, that’s a lot like coquito, which also makes the list—which is in many ways the Puerto Rican version of eggnog, a rich and creamy, coconut-based alcoholic beverage.
Pay de queso, meanwhile, is the Mexican version of cheesecake, while quesillo is the Venezuelan version of flan. The rest are more typical, even if everyone has their version of baked stuffed turkey or mashed potatoes and even if, apparently, our communities all really like their drinks. In the end, we all come together for good food, and that’s kind of beautiful. Hopefully, in 2025, we can keep trying out each other’s recipes and learning.
