The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.


MIXTAPE: Los Transatlánticos First Trip Mix

A few months ago, I introduced you to this exciting new transcontinental, multiculti band, aptly named Los Transatlánticos. Combining the best of Colombian ñu-cumbia with European global bass and Middle Eastern sounds, Los Transatlánticos easily became the best new band of 2012.

Well, back then when I wrote that first post about their debut, the album wasn’t available yet. Now it’s available on . So, in case you’re still undecided about purchasing it, here’s a free 30 minute mix put together by the artists themselves (I assume it was Croatian-by-the-way-of-Berlin producer Tricky D who did the mixing) with the best moments of that album.

It’s a simple mixtape. There’re no surprises, no exclusive remixes or new unreleased tracks. So if you already have Los Transatlánticos’ First Trip, you can totally skip this mixtape. But honestly, I don’t think enough of you have it and that’s why I’m sharing it here. This truly is one of my favorite albums of 2012 and I don’t hear enough DJ’s out there spinning it. I’m trying to change that.
