Kali Uchis is opening up about a recent loss in her family. The Colombian-American superstar revealed in a heartfelt message that her mother has passed away.

In March, Uchis released the song “Sunshine & Rain…,” which includes the voice of her mother, Betsy Loaiza Boteler. From a home video recording, her mom can be heard saying, “Good morning, sunshine.” Now a few weeks later, Uchis has revealed that her mother has died. Her post on Instagram includes a photo of Uchis with her baby boy next to a picture of her mother.

“In loving memory of my mommy, who left this Earth not long ago,” Uchis wrote. “No words can explain how much I miss you mommy. I miss your daily calls to see my baby. How you laughed hysterically about silly things. How easy it was to make you smile. If I could call you now & show you my baby walking everywhere I know how your face would light up. & I imagine you that way forever. You survived so much, May you Rest in Heavenly Peace Mommy. With love, Till we meet again.”

In the past year, Uchis went through many life-changing moments. In January 2024, she revealed that she was pregnant in her music videos for “Tu Corazón Es Mío” and “Diosa.” The following March, Uchis gave birth to a son with rapper Don Toliver. Now she is mourning the loss of her mother.

“Sunshine & Rain…” will be included on Kali Uchis’ upcoming album Sincerely. The LP will be released on May 9. Earlier this month, Uchis made a surprise appearance at Coachella. During weekend one, BLACKPINK singer Jennie brought her out to perform “Damn Right” live together.
