Vinegar Hill Production

A documentary about baseball icon Roberto Clemente is heading to the big screen. With participation from the Puerto Rican legend’s family, Clemente will be released to theaters next month.

Clemente was known for playing 18 seasons of MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He broke down barriers for Puerto Ricans and Afro-Latinos in baseball as a two-time World Champion. Following his untimely passing in a plane crash at 38, Clemente became the first player from the Caribbean to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

His sons, Roberto Clemente Jr. and Luis Clemente, are keeping his memory alive with the documentary that premiered at SXSW last year.

“Our mom taught us to continue that legacy with the utmost respect and understanding of what the [Clemente] name represents,” Luis Clemente told Remezcla last year. “This is why we keep the legacy going the way we do.”

Clemente’s three sons serve as executive producers of the documentary. Clemente includes archival footage, never-heard-before recordings, and interviews that capture the late baseball star’s story and impact. In addition to interviews with Clemente’s family, the documentary will feature chats with Rita Moreno, Bob Costas, Tom Morello, Yadier Molina, Michael Keaton, Francisco Lindor, Richard Linklater, and David Maraniss.

“Baseball was the vehicle to get my dad’s message across,” Luis added. “He was not just a good ball player. He had to excel in what he did to get listened to. He was carrying a message and a voice for those who didn’t have a voice back then. He knew what he represented. He knew there was a calling for him.”

Clemente the documentary will open in theaters nationwide on September 12.
