Residente is performing for free next month. Over the weekend (Aug. 16), the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, and Mexico’s Secretary of Culture announced that the Puerto Rican icon is set to perform for free at the famous Zócalo in Mexico City, Mexico, on Sept. 6.
“I have some great news for you. On Saturday, September 6, at 8 p.m., Residente will be here,” Brugada announced on social media. “It is a song of freedom and Latin American resistance. We look forward to seeing you at the wonderful Zócalo!”
Mexico’s Secretary of Culture also announced the upcoming concert that aligns with Residente’s 20th anniversary as an artist: “The iconic Puerto Rican rapper will light up Mexico City’s biggest stage with his socially conscious lyrics and rhythms that have influenced generations.” They revealed that the women rap collective Mujer en Cypher – featuring MCs Arianna Puello, Ximbo, Niña Dios, Prania Esponda, Azuki, and Mena – is opening the show.
Moreover, Residente confirmed his attendance with a special video. He said that he knows the Zócalo is a historic and important place for Mexicans. “It is a special place, it was where Tenochtitlan was born, where independence was proclaimed, and where the flag of a free Mexico was waved for the first time, which is what I want for my country too,” he said. He goes on to mention other historic moments in El Zócalo, such as the Mexican Student Movement of 1968.

He closes the video by saying: “I don’t know how much longer I’ll be performing, but what I do know is that I want to enjoy this day to the fullest with all of you, so I’ll see you there!”
This isn’t the first time Residente will perform at the Zócalo. He was a headliner for the Radical Mestizo Festival in 2019, alongside other artists like Orishas, Kumbia Queers, and Alemán.
