Is Canelo Álvarez planning to hang up his boxing gloves soon after his recent loss? The Mexican boxing icon recently opened up about his retirement plans and his final years in the ring could be his most lucrative yet.
Álvarez is one of the most accomplished Mexican boxers in recent history. He is a four-division champion. And in a highly-publicized match with Terence Crawford over the weekend (September 13), Álvarez experienced the third loss of his professional boxing career. He was previously defeated by Floyd Mayweather in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol in 2022. But Álvarez took his latest loss in stride.
“I’m very proud of everything I’ve achieved so far; you always want to win, but I accept this defeat with humility and learning,” he shared in a post on X. “I’ve already won because I have my family with me and millions of fans who have never stopped supporting me.”
As for his retirement, in a recent interview with Complex, Álvarez revealed that he’s not slowing down anytime soon. But he is planning for his retirement. And he’s got about 2 more years waiting for him. “[I’ll box for] maybe two more [years],” he said. “I already accomplished everything and I did everything in boxing, so I’m fine.”

Now that Álvarez’s potential retirement plan is out in the open, those last two years of boxing could be his most profitable. With two matches left in his contract with Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh that will take place in 2026, Alalshikh revealed that he is open to mapping out a retirement tour for Álvarez. “We offered him to work with us until he quits and retires,” Alalshikh shared in a post on X.
Considering everything Canelo Álvarez has accomplished in his career, his mark on boxing will be lasting.
