Shakira could be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This morning (Feb. 25), the Colombian pop icon was announced among this year’s nominees for the first time in her career. Shakira is also making history with her nomination.
Since 1986, many of the greatest artists in the history of music have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame each year. A few Latine acts inducted in the past include Santana, Ritchie Valens, Linda Ronstadt, and Joan Baez. Among last year’s nominees, Maná made history as the first group to sing entirely in Spanish to be nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. However, the band did not make the final list of inductees. Now Shakira has the opportunity to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
An artist or band becomes eligible to be nominated \ 25 years after their first commercial release. In Shakira’s case, her breakthrough album, 1995’s Pies Descalzos, turned 30 last year. She is making history as the first Colombian artist receive a nomination. If Shakira were inducted this year, it would make sense since she has pushed Latine music to the forefront of the pop music scene for four decades now. Though an artist doesn’t have to be in the rock genre to be added, never forget her Latina rockera era from her beginnings.
If Shakira were to make it in, she would become the first woman from Colombia and Latin America to enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Another Latina among the nominees is Mariah Carey.
This year’s induction class will be selected from the 17 nominees by an international voting body of 12,000 musicians, music insiders, and historians. Fans can also vote in an online poll that can help influence the final list of inductees.
