Camilo Jose Vergara — ROSEGALLERY
Coming from Chile to the US, artist and writer Camilo Jose Vergara’s latest book “How the Other Half Worships” mixes interviews with photos, making Vergara a sort of sociologist/photographer hybrid. His upcoming show at ROSEGALLERY, called “By Night in LA” showcases thoughtful photographs of LA structures under the cloak of darkness. The artist has shot some of these locales before, but they take on a different character under the twinkle of street lights versus LA’s usual sunshine. Head to the gallery September 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. for the opening reception of a show in which the photographs might seem familiar – even if you don’t recognize the exact place.

In a multimedia exhibition, a number of artists with many areas of expertise come together to address stereotypes of Native Americans and other people of color. Douglas Miles, Eriberto Oriol, Renelle White Buffalo and more will each contribute to a show that will fight these accepted ideas about race and showcase artistic talent. The show is curated by Douglas Miles, founder of Apache Skateboards and Apache Skate Team and wants the show to be about creating “a positive change for the future.” Head to the opening reception Thursday, September 5 at 7 p.m. to see works of photography, film and more.
