On Tuesday (January 30), the Italian fashion house Moschino announced the appointment of Adrian Appiolaza as the new Creative Director of the brand.
Appiolaza, 51, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, will oversee the women’s, men’s, and accessories collections of the brand. The Argentine designer has over a decade of experience in the fashion world, previously holding the position of women’s ready-to-wear design director with J.W. Anderson at Loewe, and previously in the same role at Chloé with Clare Waight Keller. He will be succeeding Davide Renne and Jeremy Scott.
“With his arrival at Moschino, Adrian brings with him a unique wealth of experience, creativity and knowledge of the history of fashion that will be instrumental to write a wonderful new chapter in the adventure of the brand founded by Franco Moschino,” says, Massimo Ferretti, Executive Chairman of Aeffe S.p.A in a press statement.
Appiolaza was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his love of fashion and textiles was arguably established. His grandmother owned a tailoring business, and as a teenager in the 80s, he developed an affinity for the Japanese fashion label COMME des Garçons. Appiolaza began collecting pieces from the label, even after moving overseas to the UK in his twenties to pursue music. “I’m still obsessed, constantly searching for new pieces. Every two weeks, I find something worth adding to the archive,” he tells Interview Magazine.
As for Appiolaza’s creative vision, while with Loewe, his work appeared at Beyonce’s Renaissance tour and in a custom lily dress worn by Zendaya in 2022.
The news of Appiolaza’s appointment arrives months after the sudden passing of former Creative Director Davide Renne in November last year. Renne was appointed Creative Director of Moschino following tenured designer Jeremy Scott’s departure seven months prior.
