New York Fashion Week hit the ground running on Friday (September 6) when Mexican-American fashion designer Willy Chavarria presented his Spring/Summer 2025 collection titled, América. Chavarria said the show’s vibe was “sexy, chaotic, hot and excited” and described his signature style as “silhouette and grit.”
According to Elle, attendees of Chavarria’s fashion show were gifted with copies of the U.S. Constitution and show notes that recognized the immigrants who are “labor[ing] in the fields, bringing food to our tables, building our cities, making our music, and weaving stories into the fabric of this land.”
The second half of the fashion show included a collaboration with adidas. According to Elle, 22 different looks walked the runway and “challenged sportswear and fashion norms.” This included, “high-fashion jerseys, ruffly performance tops, ultra-roomy tracksuits, tiny running shorts and dual-branded knee-high socks.”
Chavarria then showed off his version of the adidas Jabbar sneakers, which were created for NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Chavarria’s take on the classic footwear came in three colorways: black, cream, and white and blue.
“I kind of … infuse my own cultural history into my work because it comes naturally,” Chavarria told InStyle. “In this collection, I really wanted to show the value of brown skin people, black people, queer people, trans people under this great American flag … and just show our presence and our purpose in this country.”
A couple of Chavarria’s pieces from the new adidas collab have already sold out online, but fans are eagerly awaiting the release of his Jabbar sneakers. Those are expected in Spring 2025.
