Personally, I’m all about streamlining my skin care routine. I don’t want 15 steps every morning and afternoon. And I’m always on the lookout for serums that keep my skin feeling hydrated while also not breaking me out into a rash due to how sensitive my skin is. So when I got the opportunity to try out Clinique’s Moisture Surge Active Glow Serum, I knew I was taking a risk by introducing something new into my simple facial routine. The question; would it deliver? Below you’ll find my first impressions, additional thoughts, and some tips from dermatologist Dr. Claire Wolinsky, M.D.

First Impressions

For me it’s all about the smell when it comes to first impressions on new products I’m going to put on my body. There was nothing overwhelming when I first opened up the bottle, neither was there when I applied it to my skin. Also, you truly don’t need more than two to three drops to have your face and neck covered with the serum. And while it does take a minute or so to dry, afterwards it doesn’t feel sticky, the actual bane of my existence when it comes to serums. Neither did my face feel tight as if I was putting on a sheer night mask. After it dried I applied my favorite moisturizing lotion and had no adverse reactions or itchy skin.

When it comes to how a serum like this works for sensitive skin, it’s all about gently exfoliates dead skin cells on the skin with vitamin C and lactic acid. As someone who used apricot scrubs growing up, I honestly didn’t understand why a serum like this was better for your skin. And it’s because “aggressive exfoliation can lead to dryness and irritation” according to Dr. Wolinsky. And if you want to protect that skin barrier, you need to do it with something that is gentle, especially as you age and renewal of the outermost skin layer starts degrading.

The Longevity Test

With my skin being so sensitive, I started using this every other day instead of daily. Not once did my skin break out in my signature welts or rash and it didn’t clog up my pores. When I started upping the usage to daily, I noticed my skin was a little shinier, but not in a bad way. I’m naturally an oily girl. And to my surprise I felt like the oiliness of my skin got under control with this serum while also leaving me looking like I was glowing instead of oily.

It is important to note that just because this worked with my sensitive skin, it might not work for others. According to Dr. Wolinsky, it’s important to know your skin before introducing something new into your routine. “Before starting any new skincare regimens one must first make sure that there are no underlying skin conditions such as acne or rosacea.  If there are, those need to be addressed first.” And after your done applying the serum, she reminded us that you’ve got to lock it in with a moisturizer. “Following this, it’s essential to apply a good quality moisturizer that contains ingredients to effectively support the skin’s barrier like hyaluronic acid and others.”

The Best Part

The best part when it comes to Clinique’s Moisture Surge Active Glow Serum is that it didn’t shake up my daily routine with any adverse reactions due to my sensitive skin. I’m constantly in meetings or going to events for work. And the last thing I wanted was for my skin to break out and for me to need a couple of days to recover with no makeup or anything more than a wash and a pat. I also really liked how I didn’t need a lot of the formula to have it cover my entire face. In a time where we’re all trying to balance out feeling good and looking good with our wallet, every drop counts.

Final Thoughts

As I continue to try to streamline my skin care routine without breaking the bank or having 15 steps, Clinique’s Moisture Surge Active Glow Serum was a welcome addition to my routine that didn’t react negatively with my skin or the other products on the daily or that I use every once in a while when it comes to my various needs. I can see this bottle lasting for a long time because of how well it spreads. And it helps that it’s light enough that I can bring it with me when I’m traveling without worrying that I will have to decant it into a smaller container.
