After she was named a CoverGirl ambassador late last year, actress, producer, and director America Ferrera has debuted her first campaign for the cosmetic brand.

The Real Women Have Curves star also posted a personal video and statement on her Instagram account explaining what it means to be the new face of Covergirl. The video includes some of Ferrera’s childhood photos. She narrates the piece and talks about how she used her ambition to pursue her dreams, despite the obstacles she knew she would have to face.

“A #COVERGIRL is more than what you see on the surface,” Ferrera wrote. “It’s taken courage, strength and compassion to learn how to love me, for me. I know now that our beauty lies in our unique stories, cultures and lived experiences. I am proud to stand with @covergirl to celebrate true and authentic beauty. I am America. I’m an actress, producer, director. I’m an engaged citizen. I’m a Latina. I’m a mother. And I am a CoverGirl.”

In the first campaign spot, Ferrera introduces consumers to Clean Fresh Skincare, a collection of vegan, clean and cruelty-free products “full of the power to look better and feel better.”

“We are about to change beauty for good – to be better, healthier – for me, for them, for us, for our planet,” Ferrera says in the advertisement. “CoverGirl is making better beauty open to everyone.”

In the second spot, she focuses on one product from the Clean Fresh Skincare line – Weightless Water Cream, which is “supercharged with Truclean Cactus Water for 72 hours of hydration.”

“CoverGirl is an iconic brand,” Ferrera told People en Español. “I grew up not seeing many girls who looked like me [in beauty ads], beauty standards I felt I could never achieve that didn’t include my Latina identity. I’m so excited to be a part of this new conversation.”
