  • After the U.S. reached a grim milestone on Monday of 500,000 lives lost from COVID-19, President Joe Biden will commemorate the deaths and hold a moment of silence and candle lighting ceremony at the White House. Biden will deliver remarks and will be joined by First Lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff. [AP]
  • The Supreme Court has allowed a New York prosecutor to obtain Donald Trump’s tax returns, which he has fought to shield and keep private. The documents will still be subject to grand jury privacy rules that will restrict their public release. [CNN]
  • As Ted Cruz continues to face criticism for going on a family vacation to Cancun while Texans were left without power and water, AOC went to Houston herself and helped raise more than $3 million to help families in the state. The funds will be distributed across 12 food banks and relief organizations helping Texans during the crisis. [Revolt]
  • Women’s rights groups are speaking out against Mexico City’s ban on plastic, which affects the availability of tampons with applicators that women can access. Some groups say removing these tampons creates “menstrual poverty” because organic alternatives, including silicone menstrual cups, are more expensive and hard to find. [NBC Latino]
  • Argentina’s health minister Gines Gonzalez Garcia has resigned after reports emerged that people had used connections to him and other politicians to receive COVID-19 vaccines, even if they were in groups that still aren’t eligible for incolcation.   • Fernando Hidalgo, the host of the variety show El Show de Fernando Hidalgo, died earlier this month in Florida after suffering complications from COVID-19. He was 78. His show ran every weeknight for 14 years on América TeVé and later on MegaTV. [NYT]
  • Bad Bunny took the stage on SNL this weekend, performing “La Noche de Anoche” with Rosalia and “Te Deseo Lo Mejor.” He also joined in on two sketches, including a musical sketch called ‘Loko” and one riffing on a TikTok sea ship. [Stereogum]
