Yesenia and Joey Martinez of New Braunfels, Texas knew there were many fans of late Tejano singer Selena in their area, but they never could have imagined the outpouring of support they’ve received since creating a Selena-themed Christmas light show on their house for everyone to enjoy this holiday season.
“We’ve had to keep the cars moving because they were lined up out of our neighborhood,” Yesenia Martinez told Remezcla Monday evening (Dec. 21). “We thought it was just going to be something that people would watch online. But people are lining up 45 minutes early just to make sure they get a good parking spot to see it.”
This is the fourth consecutive year Yesenia and Joey have created a Christmas lights show, but only the first time they’ve included Selena songs. That sequence in the show has been so popular with visitors, Joey will sometimes play that specific section on an ongoing loop throughout the night. The Selena songs they feature are “Como La Flor,” “La Carcacha” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.”
Yesenia said it took her husband about 80 hours to create just the Selena portion of the light show. She says the full show is 16-minutes long and includes songs from movies like Frozen, The Greatest Showman and even a song by Snoop Dogg. It’s the Selena songs and the purple lights, however, that are keeping the cars coming consistently.
“It’s definitely 100% worth it,” Yesenia says. “It’s awesome to see how excited people get and to see little kids dancing. For us, it’s all about spreading the holiday cheer—especially after this year. Selena was a superstar, and she still is.”
