Colman Domingo’s Met Gala Look is Giving ‘Saint Seiya’s Most Iconic Supervillain

Sometimes you see a look and it just sparks a memory. Colman Domingo might not have meant to do that with his 2025 Met Gala caped look, a nod to the legacy of André Leon Talley, but we’re calling the fact that he did a win. Because, as Domingo, one of this year’s Met Gala co-chairs, stepped onto the blue carpet for the event, we couldn’t help but think of one of the most iconic anime of all time, Saint Seiya (Los Caballeros del Zodiaco in Latin America).
Domingo’s look, a dazzling Valentino blue cape, complete with a sequined breastplate, was proof that the actor never disappoints on the red carpet. It was also perhaps an unintended nod to the most iconic villain in the Saint Seiya—Pope Ares himself, who turned out to be Gemini Saga, quite a betrayal in those days. Or maybe a combination of both? There’s a little bit of Saint Seiya in the breastplate, too, after all.
Pope Ares always wore a deep blue robe, and though his breastplate was usually red and pointy, his most casual look had only gold details alongside the blue robe. As Gemini Saga, however, he wore the Gemini Gold Cloth. Domingo is not a Gemini, but a Sagittarius, and ironically, this bad guy in the Saint Seiya universe kills Sagitarius Aiolos, which is where this whole saga starts. Kinda fitting for the look Domingo is sporting, and for the reference, unintended or not.
The Met Gala 2025’s theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” And one thing is for sure, Domingo, cape on or cape off, absolutely nailed it. Because he did take the cape off and looked just as good without it. Less Saint Seiya inspired, but great nonetheless.
