Demi Lovato has revealed that they are non-binary, and are going by they/them pronouns. The singer-songwriter shared the news on the first episode of the 4D With Demi podcast.

“Over the past year and a half, I have been doing some healing and self-reflective work, and through this work I have had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said I will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them,” Lovato said.

A few months ago, they came out as queer on both social media and in their documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil. The documentary revealed a side of Lovato that fans had not seen, including their overdose and break-up with ex-fiance Max Ehrich. “I’m actually too queer to marry a man in my life right now,” they said in the doc, debuted in March.

Fast forward to today, Lovato are opening up even more. “I feel that this best represents the fluidity that I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to both the person that I know I am and am still discovering,” they went on to share on social media.

Lovato has always supported the LGBTQ+ community and other social causes such as stopping Asian hate crimes and bringing attention to the plight of the Colombian people. Lovato is quick to remind people that they are not an expert in the subject, that they are still learning, and “coming into myself.” But, their hope is that by sharing their thoughts it’ll invite dialogue and a safe space for all.
