Miss Universe Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua has crowned her successor at the 2024 Miss Universe. The Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico was witness to the new Miss Universe, and it was none other than Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjær Theilvig.

The new winner is a 21-year-old European and World Championship dancer, beauty entrepreneur, mental health advocate, and aspiring lawyer from the town of Søborg. She shined during the swimsuit competition, the evening gown competition, as well as both Q&A rounds and ultimately was awarded the crown.

The 2023 Miss Universe competition started with 125 contestants, a significant increase from last year’s 83 contestants. Among the Latin American contestants, Miss Panama was disqualified from the competition after breaking the pageant’s rules, but there were many other contestants who shined bright.

It was truly a great night for Latinas all around, even if the winner didn’t end up being someone from Latin America. There were 11 Latinas in the Top 30, including Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Cuba in the country’s return to the pageant, Miss Mexico, Miss Argentina, Miss Peru, Miss Ecuador, Miss Bolivia, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Nicaragua, Miss Venezuela, and Miss Chile. Chile was the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

And things continued to look good for Latin America when the Top 12 was announced, with 7 representatives from our communities. The Miss Universe 2024 Top 12 included Miss Bolivia, Miss Mexico, Miss Venezuela, Miss Argentina, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Chile, and Miss Peru.

Once the competition got down to the Top 5, there were only two Latinas in the competition, Miss Mexico—who, of course, had the crowd on her side— and Miss Venezuela. But neither of them would win. Miss Venezuela finished as the fourth runner-up and Miss Mexico as the second-runner up.
