Where to start with Gloria Trevi? “Dr. Psiquiatra,” the Mexican Madonna, the original rebel girl, provacadora, gay icon, superstardom in the early 90s, charged with sexual exploitation of minors, fled to Brazil, served prison sentence there (and gave birth to a boy while in prison…)
The stuff of legends.
It has already been four years since her release from prison, and her comeback. Gloria fills stadiums in Mexico and very large venues in the US. She is still revered by millions.
La Trevi performed in New York this week at LQ. It was a private showcase for a radio station, and she stuck to promoting her new album.
Her longtime fans were not pleased, though. Local DJ/Musician/Party Promoter Marcelo Cunning, who was in attendance, lamented:
“It was horrible. She only sang like 6 songs and they were all from her last two records. Did I mention she looks like a tranny? In fact, I’m still not sure if it was really her or an impersonator. It was really funny but still very disappointing. She goes on these “Latina” empowering speeches that I guess would work at Paquita concerts but pena ajena, fer realz..”
Marcelo was really upset and even blogged about it on his MySpace page.
